Stellar Multiplicity and the Imf: Most Stars Are Single
نویسنده
چکیده
In this short communication I compare recent findings suggesting a low binary star fraction for late type stars with knowledge concerning the forms of the stellar initial and present day mass functions for masses down to the hydrogen burning limit. This comparison indicates that most stellar systems formed in the Galaxy are likely single and not binary as has been often asserted. Indeed, in the current epoch two-thirds of all main sequence stellar systems in the Galactic disk are composed of single stars. Some implications of this realization for understanding the star and planet formation process are briefly mentioned. Subject headings: stars: binary, formation

متن کاملEvidence for a Turnover in the IMF of Low Mass Stars and Sub–stellar Objects: Analysis from an Ensemble of Young Clusters
We present a combined analysis of the low–mass Initial Mass Function (IMF) for seven star forming regions. We first demonstrate that the ratios of stars to brown dwarfs are consistent with a single underlying IMF. Assuming the underlying IMF is the same for all seven clusters and by combining the ratio of stars to brown dwarfs from each cluster we constrain the shape of the brown dwarf IMF and ...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملProbing the Concept of Statistical Independence of Intermediate-Mass Fragment Production in Heavy-Ion Collisions
It is studied to what extent the characteristics of multi-IMF (intermediate-mass fragments) events can be derived from the properties of the observed single-IMF transverse-energy spectra. It is found that the spectra of total transverse IMF energy (Et) in multi-IMF events are well represented by “synthetic” spectra obtained by a multiple folding of the single-IMF transverse energy spectrum. Fur...
متن کاملIMF variations and their implications for Supernovae numbers
The stellar initial mass function (IMF) integrated over an entire galaxy is an integral over all separate star-formation events. Since most stars form in star clusters with different masses the integrated IMF becomes an integral of the (universal or invariant) canonical stellar IMF over the star-cluster mass function. This integrated IMF is steeper (contains fewer massive stars per Gtype star) ...
